Is expensive sport kit really worth it?

Brookes, Glycerin 17 - approximately £100

The world of sport is accompanied with increasingly more expensive fashion. But does quality run parallel with price? Or are we being deceived into burning unnecessary holes in our pockets?

As humans, we all have the instinct to feel like we belong to a group who we can identify with. This need to fit in influences our spending habits, tipping us towards the more expensive brands, hedging our bets away from cheaper alternatives.

The psychological effects of wearing branded clothing, I feel, is far greater than the performance benefits they offer.

If you feel you ‘look the part’, your confidence will be boosted much more than if you felt self-conscious and insecure.

A major part in sport performance is confidence, so if splurging out and purchasing high end sportswear is what fuels your fire, then go fund that blaze.

However, not everyone has the disposable income to spend on costly clothing, especially when one pair of trainers can go over £200. Ultimately, only you can improve your sporting ability – there is no need for reliance on materialistic pieces, when all you need is you and a drive to succeed.

www.bustle.com have created a list of cheaper alternatives to Gym Shark gym wear and www.expertreviews.co.uk give a list of cheaper running shoes, to help you keep money in your wallet - showing that not everything has to be top end.

Sketchers - £20-£60

Overall, I’d say that whilst it can be nice to treat yourself with the occasional expensive item, it isn’t a requirement needed to accompany your triumphs. What brand you wear and how much it costs doesn’t define your talents, instead your energy should be poured into your performance - soon the achievements will reflect the hard work you put in – not the brand you wore that day.

What’s the most expensive piece of kit you’ve ever bought – was it worth it?
