How to look after yourself whilst training

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

With the majority of 2020 being spent in lockdown, many of us started exercising more to fill the void of free time that COVID-19 bought.

Yet after the initial motivation it can be hard to uphold the enthusiasm to maintain a regular training plan.

Here are some simple ways to look after your body:

Don’t be hard on yourself

With any form of training it’s normal for your ability, strength and stamina to fluctuate. When these aspects are at a low it’s easy to be critical of yourself, forgetting the progress you’ve made.

The simple affirmation of having confidence and trust in yourself can keep your motivation on track.

It can be easy to lose sight of how far you’ve come if you only keep your eyes on where you want to be.

Nourish your body

Taking care of what you eat has a huge impact on how you feel throughout the day – reflecting on your training.

Filling your body with a healthy, nourishing diet will give you the boost needed to keep energised.

Foods that are high in protein (eggs, fish, poultry) are key to an athlete’s diet - helping you to recover quicker.

You should also try to include a variety of vitamins and minerals.

For example: calcium (dairy products), iron (leafy vegetables and nuts) and vitamin C (citrus fruits) as they all help to prevent injuries.

Simple changes in your diet will make a huge difference to your sporting performance.

Rest

Giving yourself a break and allowing your body to rest and recover is one of the most important aspects of training.

There’s a belief that training has to be intense and at all times, yet when you take time to relax it allows your body to rejuvenate – coming back fitter and stronger.

Always take time for yourself, your body will thank you.
